EXPERTA OFFERS ELECTRO-MAGNETIC SOLUTIONS IN COOPERATION WITH SCIENSORIA

EXPERTA started off this year with the distribution of the new Conducsens/TK-Sens™ from SCIENSORIA.

A PC-software analyse and converts the acquired impedance to electrical conductivity & other electrical properties; coating thickness; magnetic permeability and magnetic material properties of the materials under test.

The system can measure the electro-magnetic properties of thin sheets of ferrous metals & low-conductive materials as carbon, composite or graphite (filled) materials. One can use it to measure thickness of metal deposit on insulated substrates (e.g. ceramics, polymers, etc.)

Several impedance analyzers models are compatible with the Conducsens/TK-Sens™ system, so you can work with your preferred brand or type of impedance spectrometer.

New Thermal Conductivity Sensor for Polymer Melts and Soil Testing from our partner C-Therm Technologies

C-Therm recently added a new option to its innovative thermal conductivity product line in launching a range of transient line source (TLS) sensors.    

The TLS sensors, also described as “needle probes”, provide a robust solution for clients wishing to test the thermal conductivity of soils, sediments, paints, glues, and polymer melts.    

Adam Harris, Managing Director for C-Therm comments, “The new TLS sensor provides our clients a specialized solution that is very complimentary to our proprietary MTPS method and is compliant with the predominant ASTM and IEEE standards for soils and polymer melts.”

SUMMER SCHOOL AND WORKSHOP IN CALORIMETRY 2016

Calorimetry and thermal analysis methods, alone or linked to other techniques, will be described and applied to the characterization of catalysts, oxides, metals, supports, adsorbents, polymers, composites, food, pharmaceuticals, mesoporous solids, ionic liquids, phase change materials, heat storage materials, hydrogen storage materials. Examples will be given in various domains: catalytic reactions, air and wastewater treatment, clean and renewable energies, refining of hydrocarbons, green chemistry, hydrogen production and storage, CO2 capture, interseasonal heat storage, food chemistry, polymers...

The described techniques will be the following: calorimetry, DSC (differential scanning calorimetry), TGA (thermogravimetric analysis), DTA (differential thermal analysis), TPD (thermoprogrammed desorption), TPR/TPO (thermoprogrammed reduction/oxidation), and coupled techniques as  Calorimetry – Volumetry, TG-DSC-MS, DSC – Gas Chromatography, Calorimetry - UV / Visible spectroscopy, Calorimetry - HPL Chromatography, Titration and flow calorimetry, modulated DSC,..

Thematic workshops on case studies will be organized according to the scientific interests of the participants (i.e. CO2 capture, hydrogen storage and production, thermochemical heat storage, polymer decomposition, catalytic active sites characterization, experimental set-up and instruments calibrations, experimental data interpretation…). Participants are invited to submit their wishes in the registration form (“Remarks” section). 
Participants are encouraged to submit a 1 page summary of their work to be considered for oral/poster presentation during the workshop. Experts in the various domains of thermal analysis will be available for discussions.

STANDARD TEST METHODS AND SETARAM THERMAL ANALYZERS

A number of national or international organizations produce standard test methods which are built by a group of expert in the analytical instruments involved, the application of these instruments, and/or the type of materials concerned by the standard.

Standard test methods may help to compare data obtained by different laboratories on the same materials, to benefit from the experience of experts in building test methods and avoid the burdens of building its own test method, or to ensure the reliability of the test data produced especially when analytical services are concerned.

Thermal Analysis techniques have been settling in laboratories for long enough to justify a large number a standardized test methods from different national or international organizations such as ASTM or ISO. A wide range of the SETARAM Thermal Analyzers have been designed to fulfill the requirements of such standards and thus are used daily in labs for applications as diverse as compositional analysis of rubber, crystallization kinetics or glass transition temperature of polymers. In the present document, you will find a list of the most representative standard test methods and the main instruments that comply with them. The list of standards and of compliant instrument is not meant to be complete, so do not hesitate to contact us for any details.

The webinar will review related application areas of the TCi Thermal Conductivity Analyzer in assisting with the performance characterization of carbon composites.

Accurate measurement of the thermophysical properties of new, exotic carbon composites is critical in their design process. Researchers are targeting a carbon-based material with a rising thermal conductivity when subjected to increasing temperatures, with an extremely low thermal expansion coefficient through this temperature range.  Through the initial Research & Development stage, fast and accurate measurement of these parameters helps to delineate different approaches to achieving the desired materials mechanical and thermal properties. The use of the modified transient plane source (MTPS) method provides for a powerful and quick way to determine the thermal conductivity in complex carbon composite materials. Thermal expansion is measured with a high-resolution interferometer. The accuracy of both methods is verified in testing certified reference materials.

Ranking of a variety of carbon composite samples through a range of temperatures is presented. Thermal conductivity is measured over a temperature range of 25 to 200°C, and thermal expansion from room temperature to 1000°C. 

The webinar will be of particular interest to any material engineers or scientists in the field of thermally conductive composites.

Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry Applied to the Studies of Nanosized Compounds…
Part I: 2D Carbon-based Nanomaterials

Graphene, single-walled (SWCNTs) and multi-walled nano tubes (MWCNTs), onion-like carbons (OLCs) and nano-diamonds are attractive materials due to their two-dimensional structure, unique properties, and potential applications in many fields as electronics, catalysts, photonics, robotics, mechanics, energy storage, and orthopedics. All those new developments require a thorough study of the mechanical, physical and chemical properties of the nanocarbons and the corresponding composites. The density and the thermal expansion coefficients of MWCNTs-containing composites can be investigated using thermomechanical techniques. Thermogravimetry combined with differential scanning calorimetry, is a powerful method to determine the amount of the impurities, the effect of the thermal treatment, and the thermal stability of CNTs and graphene composites. The isothermal immersion and oxidative calorimetry are commonly used to study the surface properties and thermodynamic stability of CNTs and OLCs, which are critical for their applications as catalysts and energy storage materials. These techniques will be introduced and illustrated by several examples on 2D nanomaterials.

EXPERTA BECOMES MEMBER OF THE OPTITHERM TETRA PROJECT

Project Description

A survey amongst the leading thermoforming companies in Belgium revealed a great need for a better understanding and control of the heating stage of the plastic sheets in thermoforming processes. Currently, in most companies, the control temperature of the sheet is set by trial and error depending on the complexity of the product and the adopted material. The required time for such trial and error procedure mostly depends on the experience of the technical staff. The sheet temperature is typically not measured. At most it is only monitored in the center of the sheet at either top and/or bottom of the sheet material. The thermoformers have absolutely no idea about the achieved homogeneity of the temperature across the thickness of the sheet.

The goal of the project is to deliver a guideline to the target group, incorporated in an interactive computer program (wizard), which will enable them to determine the correct (optimal) heating strategy for their own products.

THERMOGRAVIMETRY COUPLED TO GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY AND MASS SPECTROMETRY (TG-GC-MS) FOR THERMAL DEGRADATION STUDIES OF POLYMERS 

The TG-GC-MS technique is becoming increasingly popular, because it helps to avoid some of the limitations of the simpler TG-MS and TG-FTIR methods. A discussion about the benefits of TG-GC-MS, together with a description of the gas sampling system  is given in Technical Note TN690 - Pushing forward the understanding of thermally induced gas evolution with thermogravimetry coupled to gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.

Foams and felts are used in a variety of insulation applications and are heavily relied upon for their very low thermal conductivity properties.   In these applications, it is important to know the impact that compression of the material can have on the thermal conductivity.  Typically, if you densify the material this increases the thermal conductivity.  Thus it is important to apply representative conditions for the compaction of the sample in testing the thermal conductivity. Coupling the TCi with C-Therm’s Compression Test Accessory (CTA) allows for testing of materials with the ability to precisely control the levels of compression and densification.

Ceramics also play a vital role in the material world. They are used in everything from buildings and bridges to cookware and jet engines. In most ceramic applications, the thermal properties of the material are considered important performance attributes of the product.  Within the scope of this webinar, we will explore recent works published from Izmir Katip Celebi Universityin Turkey. The research explores the success of decreasing the thermal conductivity of the ceramics for improved insulation performance by adding waste marble powder to fired clay bricks.

This webinar will be of particular interest to ceramics engineers and materials science researchers focused on improving the insulation quality of materials.

Nanomaterials are an exciting area of material science research and engineering. An individual carbon nanotube has an estimated thermal conductivity of 3,000 to 5,000 W/mK! Compare this to one of the highest thermal conductivity metals; copper has a thermal conductivity of a mere 400 W/mK in contrast.   It is thus with good reason that researchers are focussed on trying to harness this potential in leveraging the extremely high thermal conductivity of carbon nanotubes in composites.  The potential is evident to greatly enhance the ability of the composite to dissipate heat.  Application areas are diverse, with a strong pull from the electronics and aerospace industries for materials that are electrically isolative, but increasingly higher in thermal conductivity. 

The webinar will review related application areas of the TCi Thermal Conductivity Analyzer in assisting with the performance characterization of such nano composites. 

In highlighting recent published work from C-Therm clients – we will review research from around the globe, starting in South Korea.  Researchers from Gachon University working with researchers in the USA from UCLA’s Dept of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering investigated performance of different composite fabrication methods.  High concentrations (1.1-3.7 wt%) of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were incorporated into carbon fiber (CF)-reinforced epoxy composites. A mat-like form of CNT (CNT mat) was inserted between plies of CF plain-weave fabric and the composite was processed by vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). Two similar CNT structures, CNT mat and buckypaper, were inserted between CF woven prepreg laminates and the corresponding CF prepreg composites were fabricated by curing either in an autoclave or in a hot press. For the final method, CNTs were directly grown onto CF plain weave fabric and hierarchical composites were fabricated from those CNT-CF fabrics by the VARTM method.  The fabricated composites were characterized for their improved thermal conductivity.

In addition, previous published nano-related works will be reviewed from Texas Tech and Florida State Universities on improving the dispersion of single-walled carbon nanotubes for greater thermal conductivity via physical and chemical treatments of the SWCNTs.

Finally, the webinar will conclude in reviewing works from the School of Materials and Mineral Resources Engineering at the Universiti Sains Malaysia employing the TCi Thermal Conductivity Analyzer.  Researchers in Malaysia worked with surface-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) for improved thermal conductivity of poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS).

The thermal conductivity portion of this webinar will highlight recent research work published from three different researchers in this field - developing more insulative ceramics.  The highlighted research in this webinar comes from: Izmir Katip Celebi University in Turkey,Soongsil University in Korea, and Portugal’s University of Aveiro. All three groups of researchers measure the thermal performance of the samples using the C-Therm TCi Thermal Conductivity Analyzer in highlighting different user cases of the instrument.Also included in this webinar will be a presentation on typical dilatometry applications within ceramics. In characterizing the glass transition and softening points for clay composites important insight is gained for the processing and quality control in manufacturing of the materials.

Setaram presents a comprehensive range of techniques and instrumentation for the ceramic materials laboratories with the ability to follow up all sorts of processes linked with temperature variation, including dimensional, mechanical, mass and phase changes under the most demanding of experimental conditions. We can offer temperatures down to -196 °C and up to 2400 °C and also the ability to work under corrosive, reductive, controlled humidity and high vacuum atmospheres.

Phase diagram and formation enthalpies of oxides are also essential thermochemical data for the understanding of materials behavior. They are obtained by using high temperature calorimetry in DSC or drop mode.

Heat capacity (Cp) is one of the critical properties of a ceramic material for its processing and utilization. Cp can be estimated by standard flat sensors DSC, however 3D Calvet based techniques provide higher accuracy and precision. For high temperature Cp measurement drop calorimetry is the most accurate alternative.

Sintering techniques are very important for the preparation of ceramics. Precise knowledge of a reliable and reproducible temperature profile is essential to the development of a quality sintered product. TMA allows for the measurement of sintering of even the finest powders under controlled atmospheres and linear or sample controlled temperature profiles.

Calorimetry and thermal analysis methods, alone or linked to other techniques, will be described and applied to the characterization of catalysts, oxides, metals, supports, adsorbents, polymers, composites, food, pharmaceuticals, mesoporous solids, ionic liquids, phase change materials, heat storage materials, hydrogen storage materials. Examples will be given in various domains: catalytic reactions, air and wastewater treatment, clean and renewable energies, refining of hydrocarbons, green chemistry, hydrogen production and storage, CO2 capture, interseasonal heat storage, food chemistry, polymers...

The described techniques will be the following: calorimetry, DSC (differential scanning calorimetry), TGA (thermogravimetric analysis), DTA (differential thermal analysis), TPD (thermoprogrammed desorption), TPR/TPO (thermoprogrammed reduction/oxidation), and coupled techniques as Calorimetry – Volumetry, TG-DSC-MS, DSC – Gas Chromatography, Calorimetry - UV / Visible spectroscopy, Calorimetry - HPL Chromatography, Titration and flow calorimetry, ….

DYNAMIC VISCOSITY MEASUREMENTS USING THERMO MECHANICAL ANALYSIS (TMA)

Thermo Mechanical Analysis (TMA) is the measurement of the dimensional changes of a sample when it is exposed to a specific thermal profile under a controlled load. When that applied load approaches zero, this is defined as dilatometry,

Typical data derived from a TMA experiment can vary from the coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CTE) of solid materials, sintering temperature and rate/densification of powders, and glass transition temperature of amorphous (like polymers or glasses)

The main components of a TMA system are a furnace, a temperature control loop including a thermocouple, a static sample holder, a mobile probe, and a LVDT based displacement transducer. While the furnace heats up at a constant rate, the sample is free to expand or shrink, displacing the probe, whose movements are detected by the displacement transducer.

Webinar November 6th: hermal Analysis of Phase Change Materials

Some materials have the capacity to store and release large amounts of energy by changing their physical state: they are called Phase Change Materials (PCM). They can be used for instance to minimize the need of air conditioning and heating: incorporated into walls of buildings, they absorb heat when outside temperature is high and release it when temperature decreases. This keeps the house in a comfortable temperature zone. Improving the thermal conductivity of the PCMs is an important element to increasing the performance of the materials for such application.

Another utilization of the PCM is the use of residual heat from exothermic reaction in industry as a source of energy. An application fitting phase change temperature and a large melting enthalpy are tow obvious requirement for these materials. However, there is another important parameter: the cycling stability, in order to use the PCM as many times for storage and release of heat as required by an application.

New TCi Thermal Conductivity Application Paper:
Highly conducting core–shell phase change materials for thermal regulation

Abstract
A core–shell model has been derived for microstructural design of PCM-based composites with optimized 3-dimensional organization of a conducting phase, and a novel method was developed to process self-assembled core–shell composites for thermal regulation or heat storage. The method was based on emulsification of graphite suspensions in melted paraffin yielding a core–shell microstructure based on self-organisation of graphite platelets with preferential orientation; this allows remarkable enhancement of thermal conductivity, which increases by at least one order of magnitude for 5 vol% graphite addition. The microstructure of the graphite shell remains stable upon repeated cycling above and below the melting temperature of the paraffin, and shape stabilization is also retained, even without external encapsulation. One confirm that the levels of thermal conductivity of these phase change materials is sufficient for latent heat discharge from relatively large spherical samples to surrounding air.

STUDY - NATIONAL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS - School of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering: Thermal Insulating Foamy Geopolymers from Perlite

Geopolymerization is an emerging technology which utilizes solid aluminosilicate raw materials that are
easily soluble in caustic solutions, in order to produce inorganic polymers with excellent physical,
mechanical and thermal properties. In this paper is demonstrated the ability of geopolymerization technology
for production of thermal insulating foamy inorganic polymers utilizing as solid raw material
ultrafine perlite which is a by-product from comminution and sizing operations of perlite exploitation.
Hydrogen peroxide is used as a chemical blowing agent for the foaming of inorganic polymers. The effect
of addition of the blowing agent on the thermophysical properties of thermal insulating materials is demonstrated
and these properties are compared with the ones of the commercial thermal insulating materials
indicating the high potentiality for the development of this new family of inorganic polymeric

NEW STUDY - DELFT UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY - Faculty of Aerospace Engineering:
Self-Healing in Thermal Interface Materials (TIM'S)

Thermal interface materials, TIM's, are materials that serve to conduct heat from a heat source surface to a heatsink surface. Aside from their thermal conductive property TIM's should have other valuable properties, like adhesive strength, to ascertain structural integrity of the assembled compound structures.

However, over time the thermal interface materials may loose their good contact with both surfaces due to delamination. This can happen as a result of stresses like contraction and expansion due to thermal cycling. The damage and integrity ofthe TIM's are difficult to spot and measure. Self-healing polymers based on reversible chemistry may offer an interesting new route to autonomously restore interfacial adhesion upon delamination.

In this research project several types of self-healing polymer composites were synthesized with thermally conductive granular materials either as random textured or as quasi-aligned polymer composites, combining good thermal conductivity with long lasting interfacial adhesion to be used in microelectronics and LED applications. The experiments conducted in this project indicate how well the different composites perform for different filler in thermal conductivity, adhesive strength and self-healing ability.The results of this project indicate that competitive TIM's with excellent adhesive properties can be fabricated with self-healing abilities.

AKTS technology provides a means of inferring additional characteristics and behavior of materials examined, based on conventional thermoanalytical measurements. A key benefit is the accurate determination of the thermal stability of products (shelf-life/transformation) for quantities and temperature profiles other than those measured, usually difficult for reasons of time, cost and feasibility.

SETARAM-ICTAC AWARD 2012

During the 15th International Congress on Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry, held in Osaka (Japan) from August 20th to 24th 2012. Prof. Anthony BEEZER of the UCL School of Pharmacy in London, received the 2012 SETARAM-ICTAC award. The award session was chaired by Dr. Wim de Klerk, ICTAC’s vice-president and Program Manager at TNO Defense Safety and Security and the award was delivered by Mr. Rémi ANDRE, Applications Engineer at SETARAM Instrumentation.

Prof. Anthony BEEZER was awarded, in the judgement of the ICTAC  Scientific  Awards  Committee  and  the  ICTAC  Council, for his outstanding contribution  to  the  science  of  calorimetry  and its significant  leadership  to  the profession  of  thermal  analysis, especially for all his application developments for the pharmaceutical field.

The ICTAC – SETARAM Award was established in 2000 and is financially supported by SETARAM Instrumentation. The previous winners of this award are: Prof. Ingemar Wadsö, Sweden (2000); Prof. Hiroshi Suga,  Japan (2004) and Prof. Ingolf Lamprecht, Germany (2008).

UPCOMING WEBINAR ON THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY CHARACTERIZATION OF ADVANCED POLYMERS ANNOUNCED

Today C-Therm announced it is hosting a free webinar event on August 21st. This webinar will highlights applications in measuring the thermal conductivity of advanced polymers. Researchers are achieving significant advancements in manipulating basic polymers with various filler components (e.g. polymer microspheres, carbon nanotubes, glass fibres, boron nitride, etc.) to optimize the material’s thermal properties for specific applications. The webinar will highlight recent work published by clients of C-Therm, detailing how the TCi Thermal Conductivity Analyzer is applied in the characterization of such materials by quantifying improvements in the materials’ thermal conductivity.

Specifically, details recently released by the U.S. Army’s Natick Soldier RD&E Center on the TCi’s application in characterizing High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) films with expandable polymeric microspheres will be reviewed.  Infusing the HDPE films with expandable polymeric microspheres reduces the thermal conductivity of the material and provides significant benefits to the military by improving ration packaging.  Testing performed with C-Therm’s TCi allowed researchers to measure the thermal conductivity and accurately quantify the performance improvements to the experimental packaging.  The lower thermal conductivity films ultimately provide a more efficient ration heating procedure.  An in-depth look at these results will be presented in the webinar.

Other published client results will additionally be reviewed, looking at past work published on advanced polymers loaded with Carbon NanoTubes (CNTs) for the purpose of increasing their thermal conductivity.
